Update:
For applicants who applied between September 17, 2024, and September 20, 2024, for the Low Income Public Housing Program, the staff is still processing applications. We know this is a difficult time for everyone with the housing crisis and we are committed to doing our best to help. We are working diligently on processing applications and will provide you with an update via mail as soon as we can. Please do not call the office to check on the status of your application or the status on the waiting list. You will be notified in writing via mail of your eligibility for admission very soon.
All Portland Housing Authority offices remain open, however, we ask that you call before coming to our office. We are meeting in person by appointment only.
The PHA staff is available to assist participants with interims and annual recertification changes via phone, email, and U.S. postal service or drop-off. The drop box is located at the main entrance door at 9 Chatham Court, Portland, CT 06480. You may use it for any documentation/ verification, correspondence, or rent payment.
Founded in 1974 the Portland Housing Authority is a quasi-independent agency (this is Not a Municipal Government agency). As in the case of all housing authorities, the authority and direction are provided by the Board of Commissioners, the Members of which are appointed to overlapping five-year terms by the Portland Board of Selectmen. Functioning as the Executive Director is Allen Harrison who is responsible for the daily operations of the Housing Authority.
Our agency's mission is to provide a stable foundation for opportunities, growth, and development in a living environment free of discrimination. We believe that by fostering strong communities and promoting residents' self-sufficiency we can help improve the lives of the families we serve.
The PHA operates housing for elderly, non-elderly disabled persons and for families that meet the low-and moderate-income criteria for the federal and state programs. The authority provides these housing units through Federal public housing, State housing programs, and the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) program whereby applicants can seek housing within private rental housing in Portland and Cromwell. We have included as much information about our programs and developments as we felt would be relevant and meaningful to the viewer. We trust your visit to this site will be helpful in your search for information about our agency.
On behalf of the Portland Housing Authority and Board of Commissioners and staff, we invite you to browse through our website. This site was created to provide helpful information to our residents, prospective applicants, landlords, Section 8 participants, and the general public.
Thank you for visiting our site.
